California Here We Come...

Josh's annual conference took us to Long Beach, California this year.  It was great fun.  Josh had classes during the mornings while I explored a bit.  Then we adventured together the rest of the time!
Who needs a spa when you can get exfoliation like this playing on the beach?
The highlight of our whole trip was a day at Huntington Beach.  The waves were absolutely beautiful.
Wading wasn't quite enough for Josh.  He just had to experience the power of the waves first hand.
Assuming the fight position.
Wipe Out!
Ready for another one!  There are not many things that can knock Josh clean off his feet--Every time he was knocked down he came up giggling like a child.
Josh had to drag me out there--it was rather cold but I adjusted and I have to admit--it does make you giggle uncontrollably!
I managed to stay on my feet for a while by running with the waves rather than fighting against them...

But in the end--they got me too!!
We played until we could play no more and then we began the very long walk to the pier--it didn't look so very far off, but it was!  We collected seashells to take back to the kids along the way and then had dinner on the pier--the best fish I have ever tasted (and I've tasted a lot of fish!)
From the end of the pier we watched the big waves roll in with the surfers riding them.
One afternoon we went to the Long Beach Aquarium.  It was amazing!
This eel posed for me like this for quite a while before slinking off.
This big ugly sea bass was a camera hog--I couldn't get a good shot of the sharks because he kept following me and getting in front of them.
Micah's favorite--a tree frog.
Jellyfish
Du Nu Du Nu Du Nu....  AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!
Josh petting a sting ray.
Other sharks in the petting pool.
A Leafy Sea Dragon--quite possibly the most intricate animal I have ever encountered!
A regular Sea Dragon.
Lion Fish
MMMMM MMMMM MMMM--the treat of the week!
Long Beach
Another favorite was a day trip to Catalina Island.  We rode for about an hour on a big ship to this tiny island.  We rented a golf cart and explored.

Amazing island flowers seemed to be everywhere!
